One of the bigger events to do on a Saturday night during the
summer months in Fauquier County is attend a twilight polo match. Twilight polo
matches start in late May and end in early September. They take place at the Great
Meadow farm in The Plains, Virginia, located just minutes outside Warrenton. Polo
is a very big event in Fauquier County because this area is known as “horse
country.” Great Meadow is the host to the Virginia Gold Cup races that take
place in early May and is said to be one of the best playing polo surfaces from
New York to South Carolina. There are more than 20,000 people that come out and
attend the twilight polo matches during the summer months. Fans set up
tailgates and picnics while taking in the exciting double feature polo matches
that occur every Saturday night. There are several food vendors that are on
site as well for those people who don’t want to bother with their own
tailgates. Some of the area’s best BBQ and fun live entertainment is all found
at Great Meadow during the summer. Gates open at 6:30pm, with the first match
starting at 7:00pm. Tickets are $30.00 per carload or $10.00 for people coming
alone. Visit the official Great Meadow website for more information on this fun
summer activity at http://www.greatmeadow.org.
